11TH GRADE U.S. HISTORY
EXPECTATIONS & SYLLABUS 2010-2011

TEXT: The Americans

MATERIALS: notebook (may be shared with 1or 2 other classes), loose-leaf notebook paper,

4 dividers (home-made or bought), black or dark blue ink pens, classroom (only 1 of the following requested) bag of pens, box of tissues or bottle of hand sanitizer (suggest highlighter & 1 poster board)

CLASS CONTENT: This course is a comprehensive study of significant issues and events in United States History. Students will gain knowledge of the changing political, economic, social, and cultural forces at work within the nation today. Text material will be supplemented by current event articles, maps, biographical sketches, and primary sources. Activities will emphasize critical analysis and communication skills.

GRADING FORMAT: Points will be used to weigh homework, quizzes, class work, projects, and tests. There will be 2 or more major grades per grading period. Note that assignments may be oral or written and individual or cooperative. Assignments are due the next class period unless otherwise noted. Tests should be corrected in test folder. Bonus opportunities will be offered periodically to classes, but not to individuals alone. Late work counts as follows: daily work is half after it is taken up (should be labeled as LATE) and major work loses 10% per day late (counting weekends). The point break down is 60% major grades (tests and projects) and 40% daily grades (quizzes, homework, materials, and signatures).

ABSENTEE POLICY: Remember that with the modified block when you miss 1 day, you are missing 2 days of instruction. Since this is the case it is essential that you make up work promptly.

3 R’s: RESPECT, RESPONSIBILTY, & RIGHT

*Take responsibility for your actions and for your work.
*Choose to do the right thing.

BASIC RULES
*Come to class on time prepared to learn dressed appropriately.
*Do not talk when someone has the floor. Be respectful and let your language show it.
*Put things where they belong.
*All Austin rules apply- particularly note cell phones/electronic devices.

General Procedures
Come to class on time with book, paper, notebook, and pen. Begin mind stretcher.
Assignments will be listed in corner of the board to be written in your planner. The week’s assignments will also be posted at: http://elmoresocialstudiesclasses.blogspot.com/
When the PA system comes on, the classroom must be silent.
Keep the room clean and presentable. Throw away trash. Do not write on desks. No food, drink, or gum is allowed in class.
Your work should be your work. Cheating includes copying homework. During a test or a quiz the desk is cleared and there is no talking or eye wandering (even after you are done). If you have a question, raise your hand. When you get done turn it face down and raise your hand for it be picked up. Do not begin other work until the test or quiz is off your desk.

Put materials where they belong: excuses, stapler, art supplies, etc.

Class is dismissed by teacher, not the bell. Do not start putting things away until told.

Write your name, date, & class period on the top corner of each assignment. Underline or highlight vocabulary words. Answer with complete sentences. Fold homework and quizzes length-wise to turn in. Do not fold tests or projects. All work should be done neatly in blue or black ink. Only maps or notes may be done in pencil.

Obtain missed work. You have 2 days to make up work from an excused absence.

To leave your seat, raise your hand. If you leave class, you must sign and take pass.**

**The classroom pass is just for official school business. Each student will have a bathroom pass to punch. Each unused dot is worth 2 bonus points on the semester exam/review. It is your responsibility to keep up with it.

NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES

1st offense: clean-up duty or sentences in detention
2nd offense: discipline referral

POSITIVE CONSEQUENCES
Receive knowledge, gain good grades and receive recommendations.
Homework passes, special speakers, field trips, etc.

TEACHER PLEDGE:
We pledge to have a class that is relevant. We pledge to respect you and communicate well with you and your parents. We pledge not to give busy work. We pledge to give realistic assignments. We pledge to give clear instructions. We pledge to keep an updated posting of assignments. We pledge to acknowledge sources. We pledge to have class supplies, such as stapler, hole-punch, etc., for you to use. We pledge to return assignments promptly. We pledge to do our part in keeping you informed of your grade. We pledge to provide a safe and welcoming educational environment. We pledge to do my part in helping you reach your goals.

CLASS OUTLINE:
We will have at least one major grade per unit (2-3 units per 6 weeks). Test will be multiple choice, fill in the blank, short answer, maps/graphs/cartoons, & writing sections. Quizzes are used to help prepare for test. Accommodations are made when needed. Most grading periods will include a project. These projects, which may either be done alone or cooperatively, include models, posters, power points, etc. Please note that an emphasis will be placed on current events and geography.

2ND SIX WEEKS: PROGRESSIVISM & IMPERIALISM/SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR
3RD SIX WEEKS: WORLD WAR I & ROARING TWENTIES
4TH SIX WEEKS: STOCK MARKET CRASH/DEPRESSION & NEW DEAL (GRAD EXAM REV)
5TH SIX WEEKS: WORLD WAR II & COLD WAR (GRAD EXAM REV)
6TH SIX WEEKS: DECADE PROJECTS (1950’S-1980’S) & MODERN ERA

REMINDERS: Request for accommodations will be welcomed and referred to Administration for consideration. Anyone who receives a failing grade is urged to discuss it with me. Student behavior is governed by the Code of Student Conduct and Rules.
